Legend has it that the wedding vase was used by some of the Southwest Indians after a period of courtship. Once a couple, with their families' consent, agreed to marry, the young man's godmother began to create the wedding vase. On the day of the reception, the two families gathered and the vase was placed in front of the bride and groom. She drank the "holy water" from one side, he from the other. The female and male relatives on both sides followed suit. The procedure was repeated at the wedding and then the vase was given to the couple as a good luck piece.
